Both the British monarchy and the Irish presidency work well and meet the needs of the respective states. Both have one example of one unsuitable head of state during the 20th century and both were reasonably promptly forced to step aside. President Higgins is greatly loved and there were the two phenomenal Marys that preceded him.

To democrats (with a small d) the idea of someone being born to be head of state is problematic, but the practical benefits cited by Davidg and the genuine love and support most Brits have for the Queen and some of her heirs at least, outweighs this in my mind and ultimately it could not survive if a majority of people did not want it to.

Can I just re-iterate my earlier reply before this thread strays off into yet another topic -
"It sounds as though you are quite happy to settle for the lesser of two evils. I was not, however, trying to critique the situation as it exists here, rather trying to understand the fascination of non-British people in a system of unelected government by a hereditary monarchy that they themselves rejected over 200 years ago.
You are, of course, entitled to your opinions but I would suggest not straying into the realm of politics which will only have the effect of stifling further discussion. I could, however, point you towards the Irish presidency which does seem to function in an exemplary fashion."

Just because some folks rejected monarchy over 200 years ago doesn't mean that people in the new world aren't interested in the royals as people, or even the monarchy. It's part of the American history, our shared heritage. Anyone with any interest in American history has to have some interest in how the country came to be independent and the British monarchy is part of that history. There are others who are simply interested in the whole concept of a monarchy and the idea of kings and queens, princes and princesses. Some are interested in the pageantry and traditions. Some don't give a hoot.

Will The Duchess become Queen when The Prince becomes King?

As was explained at the time of their wedding in April 2005, it is intended that The Duchess will be known as HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne.

The key phrase is when he accedes - what about by the time of the Coronation? It's amazing how much will be said about that between those two events and how the public mood will demand a Queen Consort and how he will be graciously pleased to accede to the request of his people and parliament for this to be so.

    You betcha.

Shock! Horror! You surely can't be saying that our future monarch, the man born to be king would publish a tissue of lies on his website. Can you?

I suppose Catherine will become Queen if all goes well and in due course. If I live long enough, I will find out. In the meantime, the lady and her husband that we have in position at present seem to be doing a pretty good job and long may they remain doing so.
