I do wish you good luck in your quest to wear the kilt at work!
Well...the question is, how common do Utilikilts need to be before they will be included in the dress codes of companies across the land? That is the real question.
My guess is that it will take a number of decades before this will happen, if ever.

This must seem terribly unfair... discrimination base on gender etc.... and, in a manner of speaking, I suppose it is. Some places of employment are very relaxed in their dress codes and other quite restrictive and rigid. How fair is that.
There are cases over the last few years where others, in a similar situation to yours, have pushed back and won. And probably an equally number that did not win.
I guess real question is... how important is it to your well being to pursue the issue.

Well....he was rather amazed that I would ask and said if I come to work in a kilt they will specifically re-write the dress code just for me so it states that men wear pants and women can wear skirts and that is how the world is supposed to be.
So....that was that. Now I'm sorry I asked, I wish I hadn't even mentioned it.
The City of Phoenix has an Equal Opportunity office that would be interested, I'm sure, to learn of a business which was discriminating against someone based on gender.

What if kilts never catch on?
God, I hope they don't...

I'll second that!
It's tough enough for the ladies as it is. Can you imagine how stressed out they'd be if all men were kilted?

In reality, these entities are set up to support women and visible minorities. However, It would be interesting to see what interest a kilt wearing man might generate.

If I have a choice between being comfortable and having a nice job I would rather have a nice job.
However, now I feel dumb having just spent $1800 on a bunch of kilts I can only wear for late night walks and church. How stupid!
I'm trying to make myself feel better knowing I can wear them on late night walks and at church for the next twenty years.

Well, I could see it going something like:
"Well, you're a man, so wear some pants... oh you don't WANT to wear pants... well that's your choice, and your problem."
When it comes down to $hit like this in the business world, we're kind of screwed. I don't think any L&I representative, or equal opportunity person will take up the cause of kilted men... as much as I hate to say it, we're at a disadvantage here. This is coming from what I see as the common person's reaction to the kilt as far as something that is worn only formally, or for special occasions...and even from the idea that there ARE people out there who either don't know what a kilt is (and couldn't care less), or that ther are people out there who just don't care. Then there are those who you just cannot educate on the subject... those ultra macho types that think they are "real" men, because they are backwards, bigoted people.
I am not saying that I wouldn't love to see things change to where the kilt is generally accepted, and (along the lines of culture or heritage) encouraged in the workforce. I just see it as a HUGE uphill battle.
It would be awesome if I were allowed to wear a solid black kilt instead of black trousers while working as a security guard... but chances are they'll never give that option.
Sorry guys, rant done.
