From what I can gather this means I have Celtic paternal ancestry. However, if anyone can build on this and provide places to look/learn for myself, I would be appreciative.

Interestingly enough, as it stand I have less than 20 exact matches in the 25 marker range. This is a significant decrease from my over 1300 12 marker match. I am anxious to see how much more 37 will neck this down for me.

I agree your paternal ancestry is Celtic. I am also R-M269 and my direct paternal line goes back to the Isle of Anglesey, Wales. My Y-DNA most likely however, originated in Ireland as I've mentioned before. This siganture in my opinion probably shows the realtionship in the M269 Haplotree between Irish Gaels and the population in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

20 exact matches at 25 markers is actually quite good and shows a fairly recent common ancestor. I for example, only have three 25 marker exact matches (All from Ireland).

Out of curiosity, what surnames/country does it seem most of your 12 marker matches come from?

How close are your matched in your surname project?

I saw you tried the family tree DNA group. I sent my specemin away two months ago and was recently contacted saying my material was received. My question is how long did you have to wait for any results after being told they received your specemin.

    Dram,

At 12 markers most of my hits are Ireland, Western Scotland, and Northern England.

    As for names...

at 25 markers its Cochran (my surname) and Cockerham

at 12 markers the top contenders are Cochran, Doty, Johnson/Johnston, Ramsay/Ramsey, Murphy, McConnell, and Beaty/Beatty/Beattie

The 12 markers are at a quick glance since I am looking at over 1300 people. These names have the largest blocks on the spreadsheet.

As for exact matches in the 25 marker there are 16 people....with a total of 66 matches.

And I don't understand you last question; however, from the 70 some odd people in my surname project (Cochran-e) I have 8 exact matches.

As I recall it took a couple of months to get a reply from them. That was about a year and a half ago. They may be busier now. Once you hear from them, you will start getting a stream of reports.

    Re: DNA Genealogy

How much do these DNA tests cost?

We've done extensive genealogy in my family. My mom's side had the fortunate nature of being anything and everything that was royal, so it made it easy to trace her lines back before 300 AD.

She comes out of William the Conqueror and Robert D' Montgomerie... along with a number of European lines and the Scottish line of Malcolm and some Slavic Kings. So basically, if it was a King or Queen in Europe and the Isles, my mom is descended from them.

My father's side on the other hand is largely German and the genealogy ends in Germany in the 1600s... Can't trace it back more than that and well, it would be nice to see if it came from somewhere other than Germany.

It starts at $169 and goes up. However, I purchased mine over Christmas when there was a sale going on. It has been very interesting so far.

Sorry, that was a bit confusing. I was wondering out of those that you match in your surname project how close are you to your closest surname match? For example do you match a Cohcrane at 25 markers?

Ha! Yeah you're doing a lot better than I am. Hopefully, you'll match closely at 37. That should indicate a fairly recent common ancestor. Even my 3, 25 marker matches do not match my paternal surname. I think your story is going to get more interesting rather quickly lol.
