unexpected expense added to kilt price

OK, so I am naive about the way things work. But I was hit with a "duty and tax" fee charged by our government for ordering from overseas (Scotland). $66.47 total. Not so much, but still a bit of a surprise. Just wanted to let you folks know this in case you planned on ordering from one of our advertisers in G.B. Thanks.

Hey come and move to Canada - mine came in duty free.

But I think that's a much a matter of good luck as good policy. It helps if the item is shipped by post as opposed to by private courier, ie UPS or whatever.

Oh absolutely; I'm just teasing, (and bragging, I guess.) You're 100% correct.

I have bought three sporrans at differing times from the States which are just not obtainable here.

Everytime I was stung heavily for tax and handling fees via the UK Post Office. Add to that the extra cost of shipping in the first place and it makes the reasonably priced article more than prohibitive.

As a result I'm unlikely to buy from the States again, which is a shame.

So much for free trade eh?

If we could figure out how to sell the idea that a kilt is a religious artifact we might get them all in duty-free.

It couldn't hurt to try. We can tell them the sheep were baptized in Loch Ness by space aliens in Ronald Regan masks and we believe the wool to bring good fortune and stop bullets. The US government has recognized crazier sounding stuff before.
They granted tax exempt status to the Church of Elvis...why not us?

It has been a topic of discussion up here often as it seems to happen frequently enough. Out of curiosity, who was the carrier (UPS, Fedex, DHL, USPS)?
