Need some NYE attire advice
I'm planning on wearing my solid black tank on New Year's Eve at the club while working. I've got a nice dress sporran, hose (most like black or cream). I do NOT have a Prince Charlie or any other sort of jacket appropriate for a formal situation. I also do not plan on purchasing one anytime soon as the holiday season tends to deplete my fund$.
So the question I pose to my fellow rabble is this: is it ok to rent a short tuxedo jacket, black bowtie and tuxedo shirt? Personally, I think it would look pretty sharp. Is this a decent enough "alternative"?
Thoughts, comments other threads that may addressed this?
Thanks....

I only know what I have read here on the forum.
If you mean an Eton jacket, that could work out.
You might want to wear a three button waistcoat or other waist cover with the bow tie.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Andy, I would rent a jacket and BUY a decent bow tie. If you have nerves of steel, you will likely find one at a pre or post Christmas sale. Don't buy the first one you look at. Just for fun, why not see if the rental place has a color other than black in the short ( Eton / Spencer / waiter ) style. Sometimes these come with slightly cowboy detailing, such as yokes and pockets. That might work for you or it might not. I would think a lot about what others are likely to be wearing. NYE is often a time of "creative" black tie, so there is no need to limit yourself to all black- unless that is what you want to wear. If it is, you might consider a black turtleneck and even a black leather jacket...
Some take the high road and some take the low road. Who's in the gutter? MacLowlife

I happened upon something called a "waist jacket" at a formalwear joint and they let me buy it from them...pretty much fills the bill but they were current some years ago and you might not have the best luck finding one.
Why not do a search of the forum for all of the threads dealing with adapting the Uniformalwarehouse Eton Jacket into a kilt formal friendly accessory? AlanH did a lot of coverage of his work adapting one...and they're relatively cheap...lke, $39.00 last time I looked.
If you want to get totally outrageous, I note that they did have some colors available and the Deluxe Love Boat Captain Steubing Gold Braid Nautical model...ahoy, maties! All you'll need is Julie, Doc and Issac the bartender.

...as I look at that page again, I am really tempted to get that red one and do my impersonation of Ted Knight from Caddyshack. How about a Fresca?

ps: Don't know if anybody has done anything with those mandarin collar jobbies further down the page...get a jabot going and you might be able to forge one of the formal doublets.

Why rent "a short tuxedo jacket," when you can rent a Prince Charlie coatee?

Send Matt Newsome a pm...I'm sure he can set you up. There is a wonderful option called "the mail" (or UPS or FedEx). I believe they all deliver to San Angelo.

The STM gift shop, as well as other rental places, will ship their wares. You might want to check out this thread for other rental vendors. http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/n...279/index.html
