Fraser & Fraser of Lovat
is there any difference in this family/clan?
as my mothers name is a sept of them, it mostly comes up as Fraser of Lovat.
i'm going to have a tartan desgined for my own surname, i'd like to have a connection to the fraser side in it, i have a wee idea, but both of the fraser tartans have a different sett, so it's making my choice of add on to my tartan a bit harder.
cheers

I'm a Fraser as well (Frazier).
Have a look at this web site
http://www.fraserchief.co.uk/tartans.html
Lady Saltoun offers this about it:
"Some of course are tied to a particular branch of the family (e.g. Lovat and Altyre), others are tied to a regiment such as the Fraser Fencibles or the 78th Fraser Highlanders,..."
"Some people are confused as to the relative positions of Lady Saltoun and Lord Lovat. It is not easy. Lady Saltoun is Chief of the name of Fraser. That means she is head of the senior line of Frasers. People who are of Fraser blood are her kin. But Lord Lovat, who is descended from a younger brother of Sir Alexander, the Chamberlain, is Chief of Clan Fraser of Lovat, and many of the names associated with Clan Fraser, (see above) probably owe their allegiance in the first instance to him, rather than to her, particularly if they are descended from Boll o' meal Frasers, that is people of other names who took the name of Fraser in return for land and food given them by Lord Lovat. But they and their descendants must, in many cases, have married people who were Frasers by blood. Once they were living in Fraser country, they could scarcely have helped doing so, at a time when people living 15 miles away were considered foreigners, because you did not marry into another Clan unless it was improbable that there would ever be war between your clans. So there is no way of being sure in a great many cases whether Frasers are of the blood or not, but it is probable that many have a genuine Fraser descent, however indirectly."

thanks cavscout, i'm postive it ties to the lovat side.
maybe looking at the tartan a bit closer, both seem to have a 4 band stripe. this is what i'm thinking about incorporating into mt tartan, but just very thin red stripes
this is what comes up as Fraser of Lovat

this is Fraser

so it looks like the stripes are different
cheers
i'm also getting drawn to the hunting fraser old, kinda a bit different with it being more a brown colour

I really love the Fraser Hunting! Not many Brown tartans out there so it makes for a unique kilt.

so it points to lovat, also, my grandfather was born on the banks of loch ness in a place called Dores in 1895, so i'm kinda guessing that his family were from that area.

not sure if the PV makes it look different, but that doesn't look like what i was looking at in strathmore
this is the one i was looking at

edit, ok, it does look the same, but the brown must look like black with the kilt picture

It is a different sett. There is no white stripe in the PV and the colors are more from the Modern shades.
One of the neat characteristic of this kilt is that depending on the light it can look very different. Inside, the colors are very dark except for the blue which is very bright as you can tell. The kilt takes on a thistle purple hue. In outdoor light the colors appear as expected with the deep brown, red and green becoming more visible to truly identify it as a Fraser sett.
