it isn't difficult, just a little tedious.

Historically, people just bunched it up, but most who wear the great kilt at various events try to pleat on the stripe or sett. I can do mine in about 15 minutes. but I have done it many, many times.

As long as you have a nice smooth place to do it, it isn't too bad.

where are you thinking of wearing it to?

the minnesota (sp, sorry have bad spelling) highland games, or camping, or just around my general area, i live on a one roud subdivision and a forest to the south and the west, with a channel going to the lake, and a field to the north and east, i go hiking in the woods alot and find stuff i like to keep, but no pockets, there has to be somewhere to hide stuff in that huge thing

i've lain mine out and pleated it within the scrunchy confines of a crowded tent. it would be simpler laying it out on the ground, but my modesty prevents that. it takes me 10 to 15 minutes tops. lots of big folds of material to put things in. if you plan on wearing it in the woods you'll have to watch it for a bit to see that you don't tangle on brush. over time that becomes second nature, but at least at first it's a real pain.

Skweres, do you have material for a kilt? I was thinking of buying an Ancient Kilt from Celtic Croft.

Celtic Croft also offers "cheater pleats" if the whole process seems too involved...

    Remember:
Their "Ancient Kilt" is based on whatever was worn in Braveheart and is great as such.
The Great kilt is the same as a belted plaid.
The two are NOT the same thing NOR interchangable.

I realize that. The Ancient Kilts had less fabric and are less billow-y, which is what I want.

interesting . . . I don't think I have known anyone who has wanted to just wear a great kilt around for hiking or whatever. I think you'll find that phillabegs or any of the modern inexpensive kilts may be a better way to go.

That said, you have looked through the instructions which show how to do stuff. In the end, all you are doing is lying your fabric down somewhere and pleating all but 19 or 20" on both ends. You slide your belt underneath (the stouter the belt the better, 2" or greater) approx where you think your waist is. You lie down on it in the center, parallel to the pleats. You slide the belt so it is about where you want it. You flip the right unpleated area over you, then the left, then you belt.

    That's it.

everything else is dependent on how you want to wear specifically. bustled, over one shoulder, as a raincloak (assuming it is wool, or a wool heavy blend).

A little practice and you'll be a pro.

One recommendation I have made to others who were considering it, go to your local fabric store, get 5-6 yds of the cheapest cotton plaid flannel you can find. Play with folding it and belting and whatnot. Then, if you find you still want to do it, go and get some nicer stuff from Celtic Croft as Beloitpiper mentioned. Or find a good fabric warehouse kind of place and dig around for something cheaper.

did you have any specific questions?
