    Great Kilt

I have some 13oz. Blackwatch Tartan and was wondering if it's suitable to make into a Great Kilt. If not, what weight is best?
Also, where can I find info online that covers making these?

I actually had a hard time searching for this. I think the well constructed search algorithms at Google have me spoiled. I swear Google can read my mind.

I'm familier with that thread. I'm looking for info on how to actually make one from scratch.

Double width, at least 4 yards long. That's it. Mine's 6, but a friend has a 4 and it's perfect for him (though he is much skinnier than I am.)

As for pleating and donning, I learned mostly from the site below, though I've since developed my own slightly modified system.

A lot depends on the width of your cloth. If it's the double wide cloth (54" or so) then all you need is 4-5 yards of it, depending on your size, then you arrange it around you and belt it on (can't help you with that part).

If it's single width, you will need about twice that length. You will have to cut it half lengthwise sew the two lengths together, along the long side, so you will basically end up with a double wide cloth, like in the previous paragraph.

As far as tartans, what are you looking for, something that looks historical? If that's the case, you probably don't want anything too bright. The Black Watch, as one of the oldest tartans, should work fine.

13 oz. should work okay. However, if you're going to be wearing this in the middle of the summer, it will probably get very hot having all that material wrapped around you. Summers in 21st century US are considerably warmer than Scotland in the late 16th century.

Thanks for the link. After looking at the pics I can see that these kilts are much simpler than I had assumed.
