    Arizona State Tartan?

There is alleged to be an official Arizona State Tartan. However, I have been unable to find anything but references to it's existence on non-state websites. One site goes so far as to say it was authorized in December of 1995. I have been unable to find any official description of it, the bill that authorized it, or any official pictures of it. Can anyone help me find anything from a State of Arizona source?

    Post AZ state tartan

From the Caledonian Society of Arizona:

The tartan is one of the two great symbols of Scotland, along with the bagpipes. Each clan has a tartan, sometimes more than one; members can be identified by the tartan they wear. In addition to clan and family tartans, there are also tartans for districts and special organizations. At the Games you will see the official tartan of the United States Marine Corps along with the Arizona State tartan. The “Arizona State Tartan” was officially recognized in December, 1995, by a proclamation by the Governor. Colors in the Arizona tartan are green, tan, white, red, black, yellow, and azure, all significant to the state’s history. Many Arizona citizens were involved in creating this newest symbol of our State with the common goal of celebrating a part of our Scottish heritage.

I would contact these folks. You might also contact the governor's office and see if they can get a copy of the legislation.

The AZ tartan is next on my list.

    Cheers,

    Todd

Nothing alleged about it, ChromeScholar, it's a fact - there is an official State of Arizona tartan. I know 'cause I own a kilt made in it (very possibly the only one, for now).

The Caledonian Society of Arizona (who organize the annual Phoenix-area Games) commissioned & registered the design of the Arizona tartan & got it recognized as the official state tartan in 1995. The tartan is registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority (ITI# 5706); here's a link -

Just click on the tartan ferret; enter 'Arizona' in the 'Tartan Name:' box & click the 'Go find!' button.

My Arizona kilt was made by Matt Newsome. I had to pay for a custom weaving of the cloth (which Matt got from D.C. Dalgleish), but it was well worth it in my opinion. The colors of the tartan reflect the coloration of Arizona really well. I believe Matt has a nice little write-up about this tartan, but I can't put my finger on it right now.

As requested, here's some pictures (being a native Arizonan, I really enjoy wearing this kilt) -

Personally, I think it's kind of ugly... but that's not going to stop me from eventually having a kilt made in it.

By itself, perhaps. But with the proper accessories (as in that bottom photo) I think it looks very nice.

It looks good, a bit reminiscent of some of the Irish tartans. There is no shortage of district tartans like this nowadays so nobody should be worried what to wear if they feel they don't have specific clan/Scottish connections.
