Step 2. Learn how to knit hose.
Step 3. Learn how to make flashes.
Step 4. Learn how to make sporrans.
Step 5. Learn how to make kilt pins and badges.
Step 6. Learn how to fringe fly plaids.
Step 7. Learn how to make kilt jackets.
Step 8. Learn how to make sgian dubhs.
Step 9. Learn shoemaking.
Step 10. Learn how to make belts and straps.
Step 11. Hang out on X-Marks.
Step 12. Repeat as necessary and have a good time with friends and family.
Step 13. Learn to play Bagpipes. (A cd player can be used as well).

Wow--now that is something to aspire to! You are staying true to your signature line...I still lack completely #s 2, 6-8. Am halfway through 5 and 9. I think I will continue to rely on Mom for the knitting.
Perhaps we need a merit badge sash for these completed skills?

Almost forgot- learning to spin, hand weave tartan and tanning your own leather are probably the last steps to kilted enlightenment.
And no I can't do any of those.

I have managed all but the shoes at some time..The weaving of the tartan at a weaving demonstration was a lot of fun even if it didn't come out quite right..Had something to do with letting any visitor to the exhibit take a try at it. Somehow the thread count had a couple of "malfunction"s. The strange things one does as a teenager. I still have the cloth, and have worn it as a great kilt. The best part about the piece is all I learned from the real weaver that I was assisting for the week at a fabrics convention. Spinning, colours mixing, bobbin loading, shuttle hooks, etc.

That's me too! Somehow I seem to have failed with the rest-----well I suppose I would have had to start, to be able to fail.

#14. Learn the Sword Dance.
I'm not a guy, but I can tell you that the kilt was made just to do this dance. Or is it the other way around....? Either way, you can't have #13 without having #14.
I have to say, that it's a sad thing that Highland Dance has become so predominately female. Seeing a man doing the Seann Truibhas is a beautiful thing.

Besides Step #13 you need:

You left out hunting your own critters, skinning them, scraping them, and THEN tanning them... I do that, I can also spin and weave wool but choose not to (isn't technology great?)
Oooh, what about shearing your own sheep?

Tehehe, I saw this on YouTube and decided my hubby should learn this dance...maybe minus the skipping ring-around-the-rosie thing
Dance of the Black Cocks
