    Neighbour’s non-reaction

Yesterday morning when returning home after a walk our neighbour was about to remove the layer of snow and ice from the windows of her car.
Like always we had a little chat and she told me she was surprised and impressed that I managed to take a walk before driving off to my job.

It was the first time I talked to her wearing a kilt. Nothing, absolutely nothing in her face showed any sign of wondering why; no stolen looks were to be observed and no word was said about it. Everything was just as usual.
Of course, she would have known already, because I have met her husband a couple of times when kilted. Also it is unlikely that she hadn’t seen it herself from a distance.
Nevertheless, to me that incident was another proof that a man in a kilt it is a non-event and causing no negative reactions, even in countries or communities where a kilt is something most people have only seen on television or in print media.

I’m sure all members of this forum shall agree that wearing a kilt in public is nothing to worry about. However, should there be one or two out there reading, being interested but still somewhat reluctant, my best advice to them would be: get a kilt – if not already in the closet - and go wear it.

On Sunday afternoon we are to attend a small get-together with all the neighbours (first Sunday in Advent). Let’s see if something is mentioned by then.

Funny thing, but I let two of my neighbours into our house (opened the door) and they noticed my kilt only after I asked them what they think bout it. So, even kilt is not something to oversee it still happens.

On the other hand you said she must saw you in the past and she excepts you together with your kilt.

    Happy kilting in the future.

I guess it depends on the neighbor. As I was walking past the apartment building next to my house, I heard a whistle. I looked around and saw no one, then I looked up. One of my neighbors was leaning out the third floor window looking at me, "i DO like a man in a kilt!", she said.

Yesterday when the postman arrived with my hose from Matt Newsome, the first thing he said when I opened the door was "Good for you!" I was a little taken aback as wearing the kilt has just become second nature it took me minute to figure out just what he was talking about.

You know what's funny about this whole thing? On Saturday, the Ohio State Buckeyes beat (the living tar out of) their long time rivals, the Michigan Wolverines. My family is from Ohio, my brother is a third gen Buckeye, so we were all in our OSU shirts and hats, and my wife and I in our Black Stewart kilts because of all the scarlet (I was also wearing grey hose to get the grey with the scarlet) and a woman came over to us and said "Congratulations today, guys!" I had no idea what she was refering to- and then I realized that she was talking about the game! She didn't seem to notice the rest. The Ohio State t shirt got her attention, but not the kilt. I thought it was an interesting little non event.

And Sunday is also a good day for kilting because it is St Andrews Day (not that anybody needs a REASON to wear a kilt).

Wearing a kilt is a non-event... wow I wish I lived in your neighborhood. It's a good day for me if I'm not threatened with physical violence....

I have a neighbor who shows up at my door occasionally trying to borrow something or other. The first time I answered the door kilted, she asked if I was Scottish(I think she actually said Scotch), and why I was wearing that skirt if I wasn't. She was more interested in cadging a beer than any real answer I think; at least she knew it was Scottish.

Once people get used to seeing you in a kilt then reactions seem to go down in their frequency.

That has been my experience anyway.
