Kilt Hose Alternatives

Okay, so with all the modern/contemporary kilts, especially in my personal collection, I was wondering what some people have used to keep their legs warm when its particularly cold.

I have a pair of kilt hose, but I feel they look to 'fancy' to be worn with a casual/modern kilt, and these where ever a lower quality kilt hose or 'budget'. I have bought some tube socks, to help keep my legs warm when I wear one of my modern kilts, but they are not all that thick, so I was curious if there where any other suggestions/ideas.

I personally can't afford to buy more kilt hose, or higher quality one's, its just not in my budget to spend over $10 on a pair of 'socks'.

Basically to sum it up, in the cold weather, what do you wear with your contemporary kilts ??

I'm sure I've seen someone on here wearing the sort of black leggings which cyclists wear in cold weather. Worn with the right combination of boots and scrunched down sock it looked pretty good. Trawlerman's socks are also a good bet, they're built for warmth and economy.

If the weather drops much below freezing I usually grab my "Kilt Johns".

I make these from waffle weave long johns I buy at any normal store.

Put the long johns on and mark them right at the top of the knee cap.

Cut along the mark.

Cut two pieces of elastic about 1/2" to 3/4" wide that just wrap around your legs just above the knee.

Sew the ends of the elastic together to make loops.

Fold up a two fold hem in the legs of the long johns with the elastic in the hem and sew them shut. Don't sew the elastic.

Voila, Kilt Johns.

Soccer socks make a good hose, or go to the old faithful winter weight wool boot socks... I have three pair of green wool boot socks I bought new at the local military surplus store.. note new socks..lol these come to the knee and can be either scrunched down or folded..

Academy Sports And Outdoors usually have a selection of colored wool boot socks, and they are a good source for the soccer socks too.

I really like the Kilt Johns idea, I think I have an old pair of long johns that are a bit to small but the lower legs would still be fine that I might chop up and do that with them.

On the Soccer Socks.. I cannot believed I did not think of something like that, guess I just dont get out as much as I used to, usually only get out to walmart most days anymore, but I will check out a couple sports stores/outdoor stores in the area and see what they have.

The 16" come up nice and high to keep me warm and they are thick. I got nice dark green. They only show gray and blue now. They are much cheaper than formal kilt hose and they can even, in a pinch, be used with garters. Great boot socks.

I live in Montana, and go kilted all year with standard kilt socks (even in -30 weather). I would say Toughen up!

Normally I would agree, but due to a new physical limitation, I am forced to move much slower then normal, so the cold just gets to you more, now I understand why all the elderly people are always in sweaters and cold.

Do a web search for Wader Socks and then for over the knee.
