Has this ever happend to you?
Hi all I would not normaly post this I got an e-mail today from someone I don't even know about my Scottish heritage, saying since my last name is Middleton and does not start with Mac I had no Scottish ancestry.
I explained to this person my last name is found all over the UK, but my g-grandfather was from Scotland also my mothers family. I was wondering has anyone ever challenged your ancestry out of the blue?

Erik,
That has never happened to me, but if it did I would consider it a bit suspect. Did this person say where they got your information in the first place?
Also, my surname does not start with "Mac" either, but that does not change anything. my ancestry is still Scottish. The name comes from a tower castle and surrounding lands in Kinross, Scotland.

I agree! Mine is Lythgoe and I assure you it is Scottish! I would ignore them. They obviously do not know what they are talking about.

Ask the person to define Scottish. I have a French name but was born on Scotland and can trace my direct line back as far as 1790 and this person states in a census he was Irish. As a lot of Irish records have been destroyed I stopped my research. I am SCOTTISH end of story. The English International footballer is known as Sol Campbel but he was born in England to Jamacian parents. I don't think his name gives hm the right to play for Scotland!!!!! Tell this person to ...........

Amazing. Most Scottish surnames don't start with Mc or Mac, particularly among the lowland families. My surname is a Scottish one and doesn't start with Mc or Mac.
Regional Director for Scotland for Clan Cunningham International, and a Scottish Armiger.

There is a Middleton tartan, for goodness sake!
According to The Surnames of Scotland by George F. Black, the name Middleton comes from the lands of Middleton (or Middletown) in Kincardineshire. For about three centuries the family there was styled "Middleton of that Ilk," and can be dated to the early thirteenth century. How much more Scottish does this guy expect the name to be?

Why are people you don't know offering you editorial criticism?

Unsolicited advice, like mail addressed to "Resident" should be discarded without opening or responding
