Hose, how many do you need?

How many pair of Hose does one need?

I surfed the web this morning, I am having one of them coveted days off, and want a new pair.

It was not as easy as I had thought it might be. There are kilt sites every where, surely they all sell a plethora of assorted hose. Uhm, not necessarily. As always, I come to this site and click the advertisements.

I did find a lot of white hose, I got a pair of them, so I kept looking. I did settle on USA Kilts, actually I bought two pair from the site. I think a black set would look sharp with my Black Watch kilt and a black sweater. I was also thinking a dark green would look good as well, and maybe a charcoal. I only budgeted for one pair, three is pushing the wallet. They had Lovat and Bottle Green. Being fashionably impaired, I had to look up Lovat and Bottle to figure out what was "Dark." What happened to "Hunter" and Forest" I just learned what they where. I about lost it when fishing lures went "chartreuse." I thought it was light green. I chose Bottle green.

Rocky, if you are reading this and I didn't get the dark green, change my order.

Don't forget some oatmeal/stone colored hose, they go with almost everying!

How many colors you need depends on your kilts and how you like to match stuff up. If you count the 3 different shades of green, and the off white ones I never wear, I have about 10 colors of hose. I have some duplicates, and different styles in some colors. 20 pairs of hose all together.

Which my wife thinks calls for an intervention

As many as will fit in the storage you have available.

At least that seems to be the way it works at my house.

MY rule for non-kilt hosiery is to buy several pairs alike, so that the inevitable attrition or holage is not a problem. If you adapt non-kilt hose for kilt wear, you may want to follow this rule. I also vote big for argyle or diced hose.

I just ordered a pair of Heritage Hose from the Wizard out in BC. I got them in grey thinking they'll go with both my kilts. And I convinced myself the purchase was worth the price by figuring I can wear them with p@nts too.
Other than those I have a pair of black hose from Rocky and a pair of cream hose I got at the Games this fall. I'm sure I'll want more, but sometimes the cost of what are just really nice socks can be a bit hard to swallow.

Ya, the bottle green sound good, that's the dark ones. The charcoal are good too.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

How many pairs of hose do you need? How many pairs of underwear do you need? How many shirts (of ANY variety) do you need? How many pairs of pants or kilts do you need? Technically none, except for the legal aspect of lewd and lascivious conduct by running around naked. Alright, from the ridiculous to the practical.

You need as many as you think you need to look the way you want to look while wearing the kilt or kilts you own. I am not going to bother counting mine, but it is at least twenty pairs, and although some are the same color they may be in different styles or with different trim, and for different "outfits"----same kilt with a different color shirt, or with a semi-dress or dress outfit will probably get different hose for each look.

But do I need them all? Nope. But do I like them all? Yup. And I like the ability to change the look of the kilt and outfit just by changing hose, or shirt, or hat, or jacket, belt, sporran, shoes, etc... That is why they are called accessories.

MODS---you may want to edit the tags for this thread as they list "hoe" instead of "hose", something entirely different in most folks opinions. Now how many of THOSE do you need?? Just ask Tiger.

    Thats funny!

As to colors among hose, I prefer the darker shades of green and blue, not excepting yellow that really sets off a light gold or yellow stripe in your tartan, if you have it, of course.

I believe that "Jeopardy" determined that hoe is a garden impliment and ho is something else entirely.

I've found some decent deals on cross country ski socks at the end of the season that have nnice fiber content and plenty of height for cuffing.
