Flashes Positioning
When I saw the thread about the proper way to wear the sgian dubh, it got me thinking about the different appearances of flashes in many of the photos on XMTS.
I've noticed that in many pictures, the flashes are closer to the back of the leg and in many others they are closer to the front of the leg. This makes it seem like the top of the hose are "twisted", or not straight.
I always try to center the flashes on the side of my leg. Is this correct? Are the pictures that show them too far front or back just illusions? Or maybe I'm thinking too much about this?

When I wear flashes ,as apposed to garter ties, I always wear them a little forward. Somewhere in the neighborhood of "10 and 2". Somewhere I read that it was advised that the forward facing flash should come to the edge of the shin bone.

That's about how I do it too. Basically, I like them to show a bit to the front but still be visible to the sides because they are essentially decorative; The elastic garter doing the work isn't seen at all!

I am not saying that I have it correct but I was shown how to wear highland dress by senior members of the St. Andrew's Soc. when I got my kilt. I have always heard to wear the flashes slightly forward of the center line but not on the front of the sock. I have always wear the sgian dugh centered on the side of my leg as it is easier to draw that way.

I wouldn't think you
d attract the Kilt Police unless you wear them against white hose! Otherwise fine! ![Laughing](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
When I wear mine, I always wear them with the leading edge of the forward flash flush with the outer edge of my shin bone. But, I think this may be personal opinion. The effect is not dissimilar to the picture of the army man with his flashes.

I always position my flashes so that the back edge of the back ribbon is on an imaginary line that runs down the center of the side of my calf. This puts the front edge of the front ribbon so that it is slightly visible when viewed from the front.

I wear garter ties and flashes and I allways try to have them centered at the sides of my legs.

In civilian day wear we can do no better than to use the example set by the best-dressed of us all, the Duke of Rothesay. He wears his flashes with the centre of the pair positioned centred on the outside of his calf, with not more than the ends showing from beneath his hose fold-over. His sgian dugh is worn centred as his flashes, with the hilt peeking out about an inch or so at the top.

Rex, you described how I typically wear my flashes and sgian dubh, better than I explained it in the original post. I think this look gives a neat and clean appearance.
At the same time I see nothing wrong with any of the other methods, especially if there is a tradition (as in the military units).
