Picked up my cilt material today

Picked up my material for my first cilt, an x kilt. This will be my birthday present. Also having a vest/waistcoat made. Im catching a lot of flack over the cilt thing but am letting it roll off. Has anyone caught this kind of crap when they first decided to don a cilt? Just curious.

There have been many sad tales related over the years. Spouses and families that just did not get what kilt wearing is about, friends and workmates insults and snide comments. But all (to my knowledge) affected, soldiered on. It takes a special sort to wear the kilt and a stronger man to carry on when support may be lacking.

Good for you for letting it roll and congratulations on your soon to be new attire.

I can't say that I've taken any flack or crap from my family or friends. I don't think any of my co-workers know (yet), but I'm not too worried about that either. I think it really boils down to doing whatever makes you happy, and having the confidence to follow through with it. I would venture a guess that the positive comments will overshadow the few negative.

I have only been wearing the kilt for a few months and my wife is a reluctant supporter at best. She doesn't mind if I wear it around the house or if I wear it more than 20 miles away from the house, but inside that circle she is too concerned about her image.

We have had a long talk where she tried to claim she was concerned about what people would think of me, but even she had to admit she knew I do not give a XXXX what other people think, so it's really about her.

Having said that, and having her admit it was about her: I do respect her feelings and so when we went to dinner last night, inside of her imaginary Kilt Free Zone, I wore p@nts. But I have told her to get used to the kilt as it is not going away and I will eventually wear it to events locally.

Other than my wife, everone else has been very supportive. A few of my friends razz me, but good-naturedly, and no more than I do them for other matters.

    Kilt on.

I've heard my Hispanic Father-in-Law make comments before about those Scottish men in their skirts and tried to explain how comfortable and practical a garment it is, but they typically don't listen and know it all already so I fully expect some ridicule from some of them when my first kilt arrives, but I've got a little ace up my sleeve. I'm having an identical kilt made for my 2 yr old son as well and we will kilt together this summer. I'm sure they'll think it's too cute to cast too much scorn my way. At least I hope so, but whatever. I'm a bit of a sight already with the handlebar mustache I've grown this winter and a sprig of heather in my fisherman's hat.
