Waistcoat/kilt outfit help
Hello all!!
I'm trying to put together a kilt outfit for a party. I think a tshirt is too informal but a jacket is too much so I plan on paring a shirt/waistcoat and tie probably.
I'm pretty new to kilt wear (I've only been to two weddings)
I was wondering if I can wear a suit waistcoat with the kilt?
I'm not in bonnie Scotland at the moment and don't have access to kilt related clothing
I have a simple day to day black sporran, cream and black hose, blackwatch kilt and flashes and some red flashes. The plan was just to go for a nice white shirt, black waistcoat and then a green or red tie. Chances are I'll wear the cream hose anytime I've tried the black they are just make everything too dark but maybe they will go well with the white shirt.
Any advice is much appreciated.

A regular waistcoat should do well with your kilt, showing your shirt sleeves will certainly dress it down a bit. A regular sweater is also a good option. If the weather is brisk, a light sweater over your shirt and tie would look very sharp.

Got for it although I'm not sure why you want/feel the need to wear a tie?
If the party is that formal then a jacket would be in order, if not then consider going without a tie. The trick is to dress at the same level of the non-kilted party goers.

A suit waistcoat should look fine if it is not too long. Waistcoats for kilt wear tend to be cut short enough so that the top of the sporran is not covered. Try to find one one with points that will only come 2 or 3 inches below the waist of the kilt or a square cut waistcoat that only covers 2 inches of kilt.
How about some colourful hose rather than somber black or hire-shop cream?

Or wear the waistcoat open.

No, I think that a tie without a coat is definitely a valid way of dressing down, a bit, and I like the look of a tie with a waistcoat or sweater. That look would not be out of place in a gathering of men wearing dress trousers and nice shirts, even if the shirts are not worn with ties.

Personally, I'd go for the 'sportcoat' look that you might expect to see at such a function; kilt, button-down shirt, tweed jacket, no tie, belt optional.
I'm not a fan of the waistcoat-with-no-jacket look, though I admit to being guilty of it on especially hot days.

Thanks for all the advice guys! The bad news is I wasn't able to find a waistcoat/vest here! Nothing!/
So I'm just going to wear a shirt by the looks of it. Anyone recommend some colours. Im pretty pale so a white shirt on its own is probably a bad idea.
Cheers

I have both a dark green and a dark blue button down shirt that I wear with my Blackwatch. Wearing either buttoned up to the second button and with sleeves neatly rolled is always a nice, neat casual look.
If I want to go more casual, I might wear a complementary colored T-shirt and leave the button down shirt open
