Why Do Some Take Such Offense...
When the uneducated refer to a kilt as a skirt? I just started wearing kilts myself, just in the past couple months and honestly could care less if someone refers to it as a skirt, I know the difference and to me, that's all that matters.
Now maybe some of you with Scottish/Irish heritage that runs deep feel differently, just giving my .02.

You are stoic, as we all should be. I think wearing the kilt gives us this confidence.

Guys who wear kilts know the difference, and in my experience they would refer to a kilt as a "skirt" only in jest. I have often joked with my wife that I'm "putting on my dress." We both know it's not a skirt, or a dress, but it's funny in knowing company. My daughter calls it a "man-skirt" and it cracks her up.
The guys at work have been known to give me grief for my many kilts. None of them wear kilts, so as far as I'm concerned, their opinions are pretty much irrelevant.
I'm one of those guys with Scot/Irish heritage that runs deep, and I don't think it's a big deal what anyone calls my kilt. Especially if they're ignorant about it. Just my $.02

I've always been one to call a spade a spade, and I'll call a skirt a skirt, and wear mine with pride and confidence.

It doesn't bug me at all.
I had a waiter comment one evening, " nice skirt". I politely corrected him. It was probably the best and most attentive service I have ever had.

My usual reply to the "nice skirt" comment is along the lines of, "Thanks, for $500 it ought to be". But since a kilt is a skirt by definition a simple thank you is really sufficient.

It's not the simple calling something something else. This age old jest can grow tiring and even be boorish but when someone is trying to insult you in public it can be downright frustrating to have to tolerate. When I am having a bad day I don't suffer fools well. On those days I would rather stay home in peace than venture out where some drunk or moron will attempt to draw me into a verbal or physical altercation simply because of my wardrobe.
Please excuse the spelling errors. My IPhone is "helping" me.

Very well said, and in my situation, being new to kilts, I've yet to have it happen enough to bother me. In Sturgis I got a couple comments, they knew what they were saying and it was all in good humor, so I took it that way. I've yet to have anybody be downright rude to me. We'll have to see how I handle that.
