That's too funny.....Too many Navy jokes from that one, so I'll just keep them to myself....Go Army!!!!I did my "exhibitions" in Desert Storm and OIF....I'm sitting on my 20 but have bigger goals....must make E-9. I'll do 30.

By no means do I mean to split us up. I made the fast attack comment out of jest. Truth be told, I'd jump through flaming hoops if they'd let me go to a Trident!

I would love to see photos of that! Do you have the two insignia as one pin, with the Patrol Pin below the Dolphins?

Perhaps you ought not answer that in polite company.

Yeah... you're a submariner. Making jest at someone else's faux pas. For whatever reason, my brain thought Expeditionary, but my fingers typed Exhibitionary. Oops... my bad.

I'm on my third 688 (2 I boats and 1 fairwatered boat). #1 was USS Toledo (SSN 769), #2 was USS Honolulu (SSN 718) and I'm now serving on USS Santa FE (SSN 763). I showed up to the Toledo 10 months after commisioning.

That sounds awesome. I might have to try my hands at tooling some fish into some leather.

I'm bound and determined to get the USN Hillwalker, a nicely matched formal sporran, and a matched fly... all to go with my dinner dress white jacket next time Sub Ball rolls around (and I can go, and I can afford the afore mentioned attire {I do have the jacket already}).

Indeed. I've already said I wear my Dolphins outside of my uniform. I have zero issue at all with one wearing medals in the same fashion. I simply choose to limit myself to the Dolphins. They're about the only thing I feel I had to work for, though I suppose I did have to work to get my NAMs.

Quite an interesting thread. I've learned quite a bit.
I will say that US Army retirees are authorized to wear the uniform and also it's accoutrements any day of the year.

Here I am in my formal set up. The jacket is a Goodwill grab ($2.50!) and the Kilt is a XKilt I made.

I think it looks good.

If you served in the US Army for a full 3 years and served honorably, you should be entitled to wear the Good Conduct Medal. You are probably authorized to wear the Narional Defense Sevice Medal as well. Published orders are nomally required for the Good Conduct Medal, but not so with the National Defense Service Medal. In the latter's case, you must have served within specified period of times. I would contact your nearest Army Personnel Office or if necessary your congressman and ask for their assistance in the matter.

I've been part of the US Coast Guard - as well as the US Army, but you should know they are not members of the Department of Defense - though they do normally try to adhere to DOD rules.

Wow - is that a hard question. I feel every young person would benifit from two, three or more years in the service to his country. It teaches many things: self-reliance, dependablilty, accountability, independence and dependence at the same time. It forces a person to be true to his word. It exposes him to work with others he may not like. It shows him that sweat and hard work will not kill him, but that inattention may. It makes him realize that his well being is dependent on the actions of others and himself. It teaches him to be at work on time. These are all attributes that every adult should have, and sadly few do.
Would I encourage every young person to join? No. The service is not for everyone! If a young person is not ready to take the responsibility for his own actions, the service will only make his life worse.
Would I encourage a young person to join, who seems to have a yearning to learn and a strong curiosity? Yes.
I won't go into which branch of the service I would recommend, because my answers would be different for each person. Not every young man can be a Marine. But the same is true for the Army, Navy or Coast Guard. The jury is still out on the Air Force.
Other political questions also need to be asked. Should the US bring back the draft? Yes! Should there be any draft deferments? NO! \
What say you?
First let me apologize for so many posts in a row. It was not by design.
I must say I believe everyone should have the opportunity to serve their country. I think notion of the draft should be revisited by the US. Speaking as a member who was part of the transition from the draft to the All Volunteer Army, I am sorry to have to say we have so few members of the US Congress who have served in the military. I will also say some of the best soldiers I served with were during the draft.
