Have a look at the recipe I posted. Branston pickle is a brand name, but it was the first. Other brands who make something similar call it Sweet pickle.
Its actualy more like a chutney then a jar of pickles...
Its sweet, vinigary, a little bit spicey and its full of lovely crunch vegtable bits. Its a good consitency for spreading, and nothing goes together better then branston pickle and a nice mature chedder in a sandwich!

So, Tuesday is my wife's birthday, and we're both taking the day off and going to Ventura, our favorite beach town, where there is an import shop that carries Branston. I'm going to get a few jars as well as a few other things... Possibly a track jacket or two... I know they always have Chelsea and Manchester United track jackets in stock, and they occasionally have others as well.

Its February; the sun is belting down, the sky is blue and I have just enjoyed a ploughman's lunch* on the terrace, wearing a shirt and a nice comfy kilt. Together with a good book and a glass of Amber Nectar its heaven on earth
*crusty bread, butter, mature cheddar cheese and Branston pickle. MMMmmm)

I'm fresh out of Swede. Will any nationality do?

At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

l have tried Heinz Ploughman's Pickle, and to my mind it is not a patch on Branston, but it is all according to taste.

I think a Fin might make a close substitution, or perhaps a Dane if you can get your hands on one.

I think you might call it rutabaga (or Ferintosh would call it "Neeps")

FOUND SOME! For anyone in the Michigan area they carry it at Miejers (really HUGE grocery store) in the international section. Oh, and by the way, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH (he says with not a little sarcasm dripping from his voice). Now I have yet another addiction to explain to my wife. Took up kilts, gave up cigarettes - took up Branstons...I WILL NOT give up my cigars from that "special place"! Seriously though, Branstons on a nice hard cheddar - heaven!
