this reminds me of an e-mail I got a few weeks back

it was titled " why parents drink"


Why Parents Drink

A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see that his bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then he saw an
Envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow that was addressed to 'Dad.'

With the worst premonition he opened the envelope
with trembling hands and read the letter.


Dear Dad:

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you.

I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so nice.

But I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing, tattoos, tight motorcycle clothes and the fact that she is much older than I am. But it' s not only the passion...Dad she's pregnant.

Stacy said that we will be very happy.

She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children.

Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone.
We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy.

In the meantime we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so
Stacy can get better. She deserves it.

Don't worry Dad. I'm 15 and I know how to take care of myself.

Someday I'm sure that we will be back to visit so that you can
get to know your grandchildren.

Yikes, we need to get this story off the internet before our kids find it!!

He's going to be a professional musician, I have no doubt. He's still looking for himself. Someday he'll find it, but until then, it's a lot of letting him fall on his face.

I thought the military might be good for him, but he deals with ADHD, depression, anxiety disorders and, occasionally, obsessive/compulsive behaviors. Oh -- did I mention three, maybe four co-occurring sleep disorders? He'll go for days without sleep, get his days and nights switched around, etc., on a regular basis.

But leave it to my wife to bring me back to earth. One particularly difficult day, she said, "Look at it this way: he's proudly straight-edge, so he's clean and sober. He's never had a run-in with the law. And he's no one's father. Maybe things aren't so bad after all."

Parenthood is sure not for the faint-of-heart. Sounds to me like you guys are doing a great job.

I wish I could find the exact quote, but it was to the effect that kids these days have no respect for their elders, they are ruining society and will be the death knell of society as we know it. Written by Cicero, well before the birth of Christ.

Kids are wired to do things to tick off their parents. Grow long hair, they'll cut theirs. Listen to speed metal, they'll discover Mozart. Teenagers are working on finding their own identity and it's the little things they can do to asert their individuality. As long as it's not destructive, give them some free rein.

The good old days when we all went to work full time before we turned 18 or 19 at the latest weren't so good. I remember when running water was water you ran and got. It was a big day when the electric wires got put in on our road. No, I'm not kidding, and I'm not as old as you might think. Mid-thirties and grew up in what's affectionately known as "The Sticks". Twenty years ago my options were coal mining or leaving. I left for Uncle Sams' Yacht Club, AKA U.S. Navy.

My wife and I have kids of our own now and our son (age 5) is already proving to be an independent little bugger. And we let him, within the bounds of reason. Some stuff logical to a 5 year old is just insane to an adult and as a parent it's our job to keep them from an early demise by stupidity. Teen agers are no different. Lots of knowlege, little wisdom. As a parent, keep him between the lines, but he'll have to smack into the edges a bit on his own.

Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.

People go from self absorbed, ego-centric screaming and diaper filling babies to selfish kids, to self concious teens to well adjusted adults with amazing regularity.

No, really, I doubt the existence of God at least once a day. Sometimes it's hard to accept that a loving God would allow us to go on torturing each other ... and for cancer to even exist. A little doubt is not a bad thing. But I did pray a lot last year in my foxhole.
