I like how there isn't much religious undertones to tartan day. It is what it is. I am a Christian but I choose not to celebrate most holidays like Christmas. It has a pretty commercialized Christian shell be look into what the Christmas celebration really is. It's anything but Christian.
Tartan day is just pure fun it's not pretentious. Strap on a kilt drink a pint or nine and enjoy. Not much better than that. int: int: int:

Robbiethepiper,
I agree with you about St Andrews Day; however Tartan Day was and is needed over here as a secular commemoration. And since Scots mostly built many of the New World colonies, British and non-British, we deserve two days!

I think they called in National Tartan Day because Declaration of Arbroath Day just doesn't have a parade and party ring to it, you know???

"My beloved America, thank you for your children. If your children want to become soldiers I will train them. When they are hungry I will feed them. When they are thirsty I will give them water. When they fight for freedom I will lead them. When they are unsteady on the battlefield I will motivate them. If they die on the battlefield I will bury them. So help me God."

And as pointed out in another thread, this past month at long last the Maple Leaf tartan was officially declared Canada's national tartan. So I know which kilt I will be wearing tomorrow.
(... which means that will have to hold off wearing my utterly lovely, newly-arrived Keltoi MacBeth modern military-box-pleated kilt until the next day ...)

Tartan Day was celebrated first as a "one of" in America on the 200th anniversary of the repeal of the Act of Proscription which had banned Scots from wearing tartan. This was in August 1982. In the mid 1980's Canada decided to have an annual event called Tartan Day to celebrate all things Scottish and the 6th of April was chosen as this was the date of the Declaration of Arbroath. It is now world wide.
