Tartan Day was celebrated first as a "one of" in America on the 200th anniversary of the repeal of the Act of Proscription which had banned Scots from wearing tartan. This was in August 1982. In the mid 1980's Canada decided to have an annual event called Tartan Day to celebrate all things Scottish and the 6th of April was chosen as this was the date of the Declaration of Arbroath. It is now world wide.
