Here's the e-Version of my first kilted Christmas card sent back in 2000 from the Highlands of Kentucke... The structure in the background is what's left of Fitchburg Furnace, an old iron smelting furnace in Estill Co. At the time of its construction in 1868 it was one of the most modern iron smelting furnaces in the world. My source says that to create the structure, "Italian (Scottish) stone masons were imported" (sic) cutting local stones to fit together perfectly, ie dry laid. Central Kentucke also has a plethora of dry laid "rock fences" (as their called locally) or "stane dykes" that date from the 1800's most of them...

Here's one of the piccies I didn't use for the card to give a better sense of the furnace, which I find fascinating (if you couldn't tell)... Here's a link also to more online photos of the furnace and its surrounding park: Fitchburg Furnace (Red River)
