A VPN or virtual private network is a service whereby your internet traffic is routed through servers in different locations. Some countries restrict access, usually for political reasons, and a VPN allows users to bypass these restrictions. Also when using the internet away from home via hotel or other routers can be insecure and routing access through a VPN is more secure. Websites such as this don’t like VPNs because they mask the user’s identity so a malicious user might hide behind one. A recent action by the UK government trying to restrict access to pornographic websites has resulted in an uptake of VPNs to circumvent the restriction by linking to overseas servers where no such restrictions exist.
There are lots of free VPNs available with ones such as Proton free to download and use.
