You know, I've taken an approach that was suggested by a post that I read here early on. One of the Kilted Brethren wrote that he worked at a day care center or a pre-school or something like that and that he fer-sure wore shorts under his kilt as children were present. It is very unlikely in my life and times that I'm going to be anywhere where children are NOT present; thus I take it upon myself to forgo the pleasure of going regimental. Sorry if I'm not "holding up the side" but I'd rather hear some kid say "I saw your shorts" than "I saw your winky" and thus get into a situation that might lead to my having to register with my local constabulary whenever I re-locate. This isn't the Highlands and this isn't the 18th century...we live in a different world.
But fortunately, they make shorts in colors other than white nowadays. I spotted a pair of boxers the other day that were in a small Hunting Stewart pattern...perfect for my USAK casual...except they were Nautica and thus $12 a pair....$12 for a pack of three I could understand...so I'll surf the sale on those puppies.
So indulge yourself in some black boxer-briefs and fear no icy patch...don't get overly concerned about whether or not you're "keeping it real"...don't let something like that keep you from wearing the kilt whenver you want.
Best
