I certainly searched and searched for any definitive documentation indicting beards were even slightly common. There isn't any. People just shaved.
Look at paintings of our founding fathers, not one that I recall shows a shadow of a whisker, but look at pics from the War of Northern Aggression, 12 year old drummer boys were sporting spade beards they could tuck into there belts.
