If you go with interfacing and it shows after installation, Sharpies are your friend (permanent ink markers available in a wide range of colors).
I've never considered gauntlet cuffs an indication of the level of formality. Do you?

????????? He asked for advice and then realized there was more to it than meets the eye and acted accordingly.

Anyway....I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that if indeed the moths have taken a liking to the jacket, they may really like the numerous kilts I know he has in his collection.
Dave, I'd be way more worried about all those kilts of yours than the jacket.

I wasn't equating them with formality, per se. But in my mind's eye, the picture of a gauntlet cuff paired with a leather elbow patch just didn't look right. Seemed to me it would take the jacket from "nice" to "beater" status.

But that's just my mind's eye. Got a picture of a jacket with gauntlet cuff and patches to prove me mistaken?

Well, almost! On short notice all I could come up with is this tweed jacket with gauntlet cuffs, not with elbow patches albeit, but with leather banding around the edges of the cuffs.

Currently no, historically yes. Although we have been educated by those from the highlands since joining here, I think some of us, me included, are still not entirely used to the "a tweed is a tweed is a tweed" concept. Here in the States we are used to (raised with) regular tweed jackets without any additional bits to them. No epaulets, fancy cuffs, scalloped pocket flaps, ornamental buttons etc. So when those are added to a jacket it increases its "fancyness" which some of us may equate to formality. It is understood that is not a Highland way of thinking, but those of us outwith of Scotland are not inherently...yet, wired that way. Be patient, we're coming around

As a child I remember leather patches being sewn onto the elbows and cuffs of jackets when new to protect and prolong their life. Nowadays in a more "throwaway" society such things are hardly seen.

I got the jacket back from the tailor Saturday, and I'm happy with the result. She put interfacing behind each of the worn bits and you really can't notice. It is a casual, hairy tweed and it now looks fine. Cost - $15.

I'd also like to thank everyone for their input. Because of your responses I was able to discuss elbow patches, reweaving and interfacing with my tailor and get this thing fixed. I'm definitely NOT a DIY'er when it comes to this. I've been on XMTS for over six years and have probably asked for advice three or four times, and each time the members have come through with help.
    Thanks again,
    David

No, never have, Sandy. They are simply a different style of cuff, in my opinion. Gauntlet, Crail, and Braemar - all share the same levels of formality. Levels of formality depend more on what style of jacket it is (i.e. - Argyll in black barathea, a doublet, tweed jacket, etc).

    Cheers,
