I'm going to suggest Stumptown kilts out of Portland OR. Saw them up here at the Highland Games in June and they have a large pocket built into the apron as well as attachable pockets of two different sizes you can buy. Under 200.00

Has anybody bought a www.Alphakilts.com ? I'm really liking the box pleated one. Thats probably the next one I'll get. If you have one, please let me know how you like it! Thanks
Tell me to MYOB, but as one who has learned from my first kilt until today, sometimes holding off on a purchase and taking a little longer to put some money aside is a smarter move. I will be one to admit that I have made the mistake. As far as AltKilt I HIGHLY recommend them, they are great kilts and the box pleats look great.

I think that wearing a sporran on a modern kilt looks just fine, except for the UK's with the V-shaped set of front snaps. To me, the snaps are a something that is meant to be seen, and I would not want to cover them up. However, as the OP said, if you have a UK with pockets, you don't need to worry about a sporran....

Just ordered a Stillwater cargo sporran to go with an alt.kilt. I prefer a sporran to pockets.

Re: New modern kilts
As for socks/shoes, I tend to wear Dr. Martens and knee high striped socks (or the diamond ribbed ones). Or just sandals on warm days.

Re: New modern kilts
As far as the sporrans with Utilikilt-type kilts, experiment, be creative, I think it can work.
This is a Shoshone deerskin pouch used as a sporran with my old UK basil Survival II
This is my custom hair-on buffalo sporran (by Miss April's Carpetbags) with my brown leather Utilikilt.
And this is my brown Freelander with my brown leather UK
Here's my Stillwater nightstalker sporran with my Freedom Kilts maroon dress model
As far as price; keep in mind that many kiltmakers will have a two payment plan. Roughly half up front with your order and half on completion. That's always helped me "afford" higher quality kilts. Can't hurt to ask the kiltmaker.
And there's a HUGE difference between price and VALUE...utility type kilts are made for rough wear. Saving money there may mean buying a kilt sewn up with cheap thread that won't hold up to the task.
If you can't afford the quality now - then save. Its worth it. And don't forget a quality kilt will hold its value much better than an inexpensively made kilt.
You may be way ahead of me here - but one of the best tricks for saving kilt money is saving your loose change at the end of the day - adds up fast.
You can have any two of price, quality, or service.
