    I think that wearing a sporran on a modern kilt looks just fine, except for the UK's with the V-shaped set of front snaps. To me, the snaps are a something that is meant to be seen, and I would not want to cover them up. However, as the OP said, if you have a UK with pockets, you don't need to worry about a sporran....

    Just ordered a Stillwater cargo sporran to go with an alt.kilt. I prefer a sporran to pockets.

    As for socks/shoes, I tend to wear Dr. Martens and knee high striped socks (or the diamond ribbed ones). Or just sandals on warm days.
