I agree. The guy was a total jerk! I wonder though, if he was judging you on military standards rather than as a civilian. I know that troopers standing at inspection are held to a more rigorous standard and your were wearing a uniform. Did he think he was you Sargent Major?

Reason: The 'you' needed an 'r'
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.

Wow, now that is a bit much Cannot say any of my kilts hit below the knee cap so I am "guilty" as well. I do have my opinions about the kilt, however cannot say that is anyones place to do so unsolicited physically or verbally, especially in public. You handled it well

While this self-ordained hypocrite (pants-wearing) kilt-fascist individual was speaking, did the phrase, "annoying butt plug," EVER cross your mind?

LOL...well if he was, I would have locked his heels...Sergeant Major or not (I've gotten to a rank where I could do that and get away with it...assuming, of course, I had good cause to do so).
Edited to add: Your post got me questioning/wondering...what does the RRoS Regulation say...so I just looked it up: "The bottom of the apron should hang one inch above the center of the knee." That sounds like the top of the kneecap to me. I may have been 1.5"...but at any rate...he would still be "incorrect" if he were attempting to hold me to the military standard...which to my knowledge is the ONLY place we will ever find a written rule for how to wear one's kilt.
Thanks all for the comments and playing along here!
SaxandPipes...those offwhite/ecru hose are the pair that David Pope gifted me about a month ago when I put out a call on here to rid some people of some off-white hose that were taking up space in their drawer. He had several pair of hand knit hose and sent them to me to pick the pair that I liked/fit me best. I'm deeply indebted to him. As he said "If you have to wear white/off-white hose (which was our specified uniform), you might as well wear a pair of quality hand knit ones."
Jock...I will look up the thread that you have referred to. Look forward to reading it. As others have said, I don't think there is much one can do to change the mind/opinion of a guy like this. It's hard to educate people that already know it all. I felt like telling him that I'd see his Scottish expertise and raise him five other Scots who would give different answers...but again...I just politely (if somewhat sarcastically) thanked him for his opinion and told him that I was quite comfortable/happy with the way my kilt fits.

Did I say anything to them? Of course not!
Priest or no, I don't think I would "say" anything either.
...might deck 'im if 'e grabbed my clothes, but say anything... no, not likely. :buttkick:

This pic was taken at the same event as the one I posted above. I'd call this "gangsta style". I got the impression that the kilt was likely made properly to his measurements, but that no one ever told him how to wear it. (Got a side shot too: No dirk belt, and wee sporran on a chain.) As he was with his girlfriend, I made no attempt to enlighten him -- would've been rude.

Lordy Lordy Lordy - the kilt police do congretate at gatherings. Once had a kilt cop tell me I had no right to wear a tartan that Lochcarron and others have mass produced for years. Go figure.
My clinical guess is that kilt police were raised in chaotic homes as children where the rules were constantly changing (i.e. drunk or crazy parents - or both). So, as adults they tend to cling to rules for safety and any violation of the rules threatens them with a return to chaos - at least at their subconscious level. So screw them - they need to be seeking a therapist for help with their childhood issues, not accosting kilties at gatherings and berating them for violating "their perception of the rules."
Freudian musings aside. You did well in dealing with that idiot.
I still prefer the standard two word phrase "Foxtrot Uniform."

Wow, lucky man!
They most certainly don't look like renta-kilt hose (which is why I believe most people have the problem with the various shades of white). Good thinking...
Anybody have a nice vintage sporran they don't want...?

I'm one of the ones guilty of too long kilts. I got my boys new kilts for the VA Scottish Games - they're about an inch too long, but all my kids are doing is growing these days, so if I hem them, I'll have to take them down in a few months, and hemming them will mess up the pleats. Plus my carpal tunnel and arthritis in my hands has been acting up lately.
There, I admit to being a lazy loser full-of-excuses Mom! (and yes, I pulled those kilts up high!)
