    Derek - Great pics!

Question: Are those square stone houses (with what appears to be stone/slate roofs) surviving bastle houses from the reiver days? As I recall, North Yorkshire was within range of raids from Scotland's (or England's) riding families.

I'm not sure where exactly you are are on the map with these pics, but I can tell you that looking at them stirred me down to a core DNA level...some lurking blood was most pleased to see the homeland. Thanks

Orvice .. as far as I am aware those little square buildings (and there is nearly one in every field) are a sanctuary for the livestock to go in when the weather turns bad. Also on the first floor they stock the animal food out of the way of the weather as well. If anyone got further info please let us know.
RK .... the location in North Yorkshire is .... Find York on a map of the UK ... go up a bit till you see Richmond, then its head left to Reeth and Swaledale where the pics were taken.

    Re: A Swaledale Selection

The last time I was in the UK I met Alex (cesnna152towser) in Carlisle and we took the train from Carlisle to Settle (the fabled Settle / Carlisle Line) and back for a day trip. It was March and a SERIOUS gale was blowing across The Dales. Some of the most stunning countryside I've ever seen in my life. (I like gales. )

er.....do you have any MORE pictures??

    Re: A Swaledale Selection

In truth Derek, if these pictures were in a coffee table book I would have a copy right where I sit to drink my tea. And it would be sitting beside the coffee table book of pictures from Riverkilt (yea, he's not done one either).

Derek, you are quite right . They are barns or the old term Laithe's . The grass would be mown in the adjacant meadow or meadow's during summer and dried into hay then stored in the hay loft of the barn for winter fodder . Cattle were tethered in below and at one end in what's called the shippon until spring .
Have you ever walked in my neck of the woods in Wharfedale ? Its about 30 odd miles south of Swaledale

    Regards
    Chris
