I have to agree with Tobus, especially *if* any of the straps will be showing, though my own 2-strap Newsome /Macdonnell of Keppoch (Lochcarron Ancient colours) has black straps, and they really do not detract from the tartan.
I would think too, that you'd have to consider when & where you might be wearing the given kilt/tartan (formal affairs, day wear, etc).
Just for the record, I've worn both 3 & 2-strap, and I prefer 2-strap. It's just a personal preference, that's all.
