Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
For anyone interested in the aforementioned haggis balls here's what you do,
pre cook your haggis, then with a small scoop or hands form the haggis into whatever sized balls you like. I generally shoot for golf ball sized ones and once they are ready set aside while you make the batter
Make a pancake batter consistency batter using flour, salt and pepper, a little cayanne, touch of baking powder, and half a pint ( or depending on how thick you like the batter maybe more ) of your favouite brew. I often use Guiness.
Run the balls through some flour, then into the batter, then into a deep fryer until golden brown and serve with a whiskey cream sauce comprised of heavy cream, whiskey, and honey.

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
For my family the big meal is Christmas breakfast. We will be having scrambled eggs, sawmill gravy, biscuits, and large amounts of bacon and sausage patties. This will be my first year having Christmas eve and Christmas dinner with my new in-laws and their traditions are that for Christmas eve they have corn chowder, then Christmas dinner will be rack of lamb. I have no idea what the sides will be, but since my wife doesn't like lamb this will be my once a year opportunity to have lamb.

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
Since living in France if I'm spending the holiday period in France like I am this year (I won't be able to get back home until March) then I have to suffer their version. Over here they celebrate on Chrstmas eve (in fact, they celebrate every event the day before (strange customs)) with lots of very rich foods like lobster and foie gras which are reasonably good to eat but difficult the next day (because your system is not used to such rich fare). That's probably the reason why Christmas day is just another day for them. I hate Christmas in France and usually try to avoid being here during this period. Very little "Christmas Spirit", no carols on the TV or radio, nothing really "Special". I hope someone takes pity on all of us that won't be having the traditional "Christmas dinner" this year and continues this thread after Christmas with some photos to show us what we missed!

I was always told that one should never judge France on the French.

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
For the past 16 years I have spent Christmas on my own and this year will be no exception. Not ever having learned to cook from scratch, I have stocked up on items from the supermarket that I can prepare/microwave following the printed instructions: smoked salmon terrine to start, followed by chicken breast with apricot stuffing balls, fresh mashed potatoes, brussels sprouts and carrots, and to finish, traditional Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream. All washed down with a glass or two of Moet & Chandon champagne, several glasses of Barolo, and a good French Sauternes to accompany the pudding. It is imperative that the meal ends by 3.00pm so that I can Toast Her Majesty The Queen as she gives us her Christmas message, followed by another to my good friends around the world - that's you!
The day will probably conclude with mince pies and wine in front of the TV!
I begin socialising again on New Year's Eve when I join my neighbour for a special lunch, but the evening will find me alone again - which is fine by me.
Take care,
Ham.

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
I and the parrot are on our own this weekend: My lass leaves today to spend it with her parents out of state. But we'll be house-sitting down at her place; and we'll have our own celebration New Year's weekend.
So it'll probably be some "comfort food" this weekend that Chiyome and I both like:

Re: What is your Christmas day meal this year?
My wife and I had often spent Christmas Day alone, and we developed our own traditions. The only constant is breakfast. We have panettone (a rich Italian bread containing dried fruits, which I finally baked yesterday), a ricotta pie (served cold), some sausage or ham, and a lot of champagne. Dinner is usually something simple.
For many years, we spent Christmas Eve with a group of friends; we took turns hosting an elaborate dinner party, and never in twenty years did we have the same menu. When we hosted, we ate the leftovers for dinner on Christmas day, which made things easy. We have since moved to another state, but our traditions seem to have stuck. For the last three years, friends from Philadelphia have stayed with us for Christmas. Mutual friends who now live in North Carolina, join us for dinner on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day is rather relaxed and anticlimactic. This year, however, we are expecting other guests to drop in on Christmas Day, so another dinner will be in the works. We will have ham, because it is easy when you don't know when you will serve, and our Jewish house guests love it (I have learned not to feel guilty serving it to them). They bring me Baci chocolates (which we can't buy here), and I feed them ham!
