*** to all of the above. I have seen this, too, but I have also seen that the tartan that the kilt is made from can be pleated so as not to create a pattern on the back. If you like that tartan well enough, you could consider perhaps getting it pleated that way.

    Hi
Thanks for your replies and now I am seeing the light I understand all your opinions and really see it now myself. It does look like a costume and having thought about it it really isn't what I want to wear or portray as my country's national dress . It was an impulsive thought but now having read your posts and thought about it I am going to look again for someother tartan.
Thank you all for your views

I, too, was tempted at first to buy a "package deal" when shopping for my first kilt. And like you, was shown the error of my ways by the good rabble here. I put things together piece by piece and got what I wanted, not what came with the pre-set options.

Re: Thinking of buying a Saltire outfit :)

I have hesitated joining in this thread because in my kilted youth (read about 3 years ago, less than a year after my first kilt) I was initially taken by the striking appearence of the blue Saltire (and subsequently the grey-black Rampant Lion) motif kilt but after much consideration (time to think about it because of funding and other priorities) decided against it, and am glad I did so. I so much more appreciate my tartan kilts.

As to buying a "package" I think that depends on the vendor whom you are purchasing from. Most of the eBay vendor packages I would agree are filled with low quality and/or useless accessories, and the quality of the primary goods, namely the kilt and jacket/waistcoat set, can be wildly variable. However, I purchased my first kilt as part of a "package" deal from J Higgins here in the US and was still able to choose my own specific accessories, recieving a basic discount for the kilt and jacket set, then a progressively slightly greater discount for additional items such as a tweed jacket set, clan sporran, belt and clan buckle, clan kilt pin, balmoral and clan cap badge, nice all leather ghillies and hose (okay, as a naive novice I went a little overboard on the clan labelled gear) and a few other things. That package deal got me what I wanted AND saved me several hundred dollars over what I would have paid for the individual pieces. I have since filled in with additional accessories and such as individual purchases, but usually at full retail non-discounted prices, unless I happen to find a special sale. Just another viewpoint. I am not sure what vendors other than Higgins would offer a progressive discount package such as that and still let you choose your own pieces, but I would consider that another way to get the whole kit and kaboodle done in one fell swoop, if they have what you want.

Re: Thinking of buying a Saltire outfit :)

The idea of having a national icon on my butt, and sitting on it, is what put me off of the Saltire. Well, I am not crazy about the design, either, although the tartan pleated differently would probably be fine. As for a package deal: I got the 8-Yard #2 Package (Armstrong Ancient, all the PC and tux stuff) from USA Kilts to wear at my wedding last summer. About the same time, I just had to have a Casual package (American Heritage, Buzz Kidder sporran, Jacobite shirt, plus the other stuff), too. Rocky provides choices for the different parts of the packages, and I got a great value while having plenty of choices, too. I am totally pleased with both kilts mentioned, and with the Semi-Trad Isle of Skye that came along in about September.

Me too. Too bad the cost is rediculous!

Re: Thinking of buying a Saltire outfit :)

I've a Saltire kilt and I love it, it's quite popular round my way (Falkirk area) I was at a wedding last year where there were four of them. I think it appeals to younger men that are proudly Scottish with out having any direct clan association or want to go for something a bit more modern while being traditional at the same time.
however each to their own, I think sometimes people read to much in to things theres nothing disrepectful about sitting on yer kilt.
    good luck whatever you choose

Yes, IMHO I would advise against it, either Pride Of Norway or a family clan tartan is the way forward I think.
