Kentucky Colonel tartan?

More generally, I would say that the Aid de Camp is one of ambassadorial title for a Colonel, as it is more specifically meant to mean an assistant or aid to the Governor. But within the context of the Colonels, it is more one of one that means to promote the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as an aid in that respects, as well as to promote charity organizations. Originally the title of ADC was given to those directly assisting the Governor, and is still used within those contexts for staff members, but the Colonels are an honorary group, and as such, focus more on the charity aspects and the "good name" of the state, in a sense.

I hope that made sense, and that's my paraphrase of the ideas behind it. Being a part of the Colonel title as the ADC is, it also gives one the right to wear the uniform of the ADC if one is a Colonel (the braided rope on the mess jacket shoulder, etc.) symbolizing one's duty of service and assistance.

Very impressive! The uniforms reminds me of the US Army dress uniform from the late 1880s to WWI era.

That is a sharp looking uniform. I admit I'd never seen one. Of course you'd get laughed out of anywhere in Kentucky (except maybe a Colonel-themed Derby party) if you wore it. But clearly that Mr. Lauten has more money than he knows what to do with anyway.

Back on topic: while the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels is a charity and in theory you should continue to pay dues to be "in good standing", the Kentucky Colonel commission is conferred by the governor and countersigned by the secretary of state. For that reason alone it seems that the official state tartan of the Commonwealth of Kentucky is the wholly appropriate kilt to wear to show one's affiliation as a colonel.

You're just going to have to trust me on this one.

Then trust you I shall. :-) And yes, the Honorable Order is a charity organization, but one must be conferred the title from the Governor first, indeed you are correct, sir.

I don't think anyone is talking about wearing the kilt with the uniform (although that mess jacket might look nice with the kilt, and that high-collared jacket could be nicely converted to a doublet similar to a Montrose). Anyway, the uniform in question is not required attire for a Kentucky Colonel. A recommendation for regular and dress uniforms was approved at the 1931 organizational meeting of the Honorable Order, but the evidence is that only a handful of them were ever made.

That's always been my understanding, too, is that very few were actually made, none were thereafter "required", but they exist in a historical setting, so to speak, and can still be used and considered a valid uniform.

Honestly, I would like to have the mess jacket and have it cut shorter and wear it with a kilt, personally. But that's just me. :-)
