I have no advice to offer other than that which you have received but I did want to say from a Scots expatriate living on Massachusetts' North Shore.

Personally (and this purely personal prejudice) I never, ever wear white hose because I think they look tacky. I say go with the black.

Can you tie your shoe laces? If so, you will have no problem tying a bow tie. It is EXACTLY the same knot!
