    Re: Formal event hose color

    I like the claret!

With the tartan itself having plenty of green, and with the Prince Charlie and shirt having plenty of black and white, your outfit doesn't need any more of those colours.

In addition the tartan is rather muted in its colours.

So my preference would be to go with a bold colour: red, claret, royal blue, even purple or golden yellow.

As always, I feel that it's best to avoid using one of the kilt's main colours, the "ground" colours if you will, for the hose.

Black, white, and grey are "safe" because they never clash, but neither do they add anything to the overall "look".

I would definitely go with the dark green because:

    1. they are darker and will go well with your tartan, I think, and
    2. you have them.

I assume yours is the Modern version, but if it's the Ancient, the lighter green might work just as well.

I like silk ribbon garters for evening wear, but that's the only time I wear them instead of ties. (Most folks won't agree with me about the ribbons, I fear. And if you wear castelated hose, that doesn't work either.) You can even make a pair for very little money by going to the sewing store and getting a bit of grosgrain ribbon, elastic, and velcro. You don't even need a sewing machine for that!

    Re: Formal event hose color

Since you have Ghillie brogues, I'd shoot for something that would show off the laces- meaning something lighter, rather than darker. One color way of Scott Green has a fair amount of blue-grey and if yours has that, then I'd consider the blue-grey hose. They may look a little too outdoor-casual, but I'd take a look if I were you. .

If you have time, why not shoot a couple of quick pictures? You can even do one sock on one leg and another color on the other.
