Re: "Western" Style with Contemporary Kilts
Okay, I'm a sixth-generation Texan, and unless I'm wearing shorts and flip-flops, I'm wearing boots and jeans.
I've seen several wearing cowboy boots and hats with kilts (and yes, even with a PC) at the various Highland games we attend around Texas, but I've got to say that I don't care for the look, and don't think it works. Personally, I think it looks a bit silly and costume-y (if that's a word).
IMHO, better to choose one look or the other, and if you choose to wear the kilt, then leave the cowboy boots at home on the day you attend the games.
For what it's worth, I regularly see one tall, older gentleman at the various games who's always sporting battered boots, well-worn Wranglers, an old Stetson, and a well-cut vest in his clan tartan. I think that's a far better look if you want to go Western.

As a fellow Texan, I agree completely.

I think you have nailed it Shaun. I like the look of western gear and love the look of highland gear, but not the look of the blend.

Re: "Western" Style with Contemporary Kilts
I do think that some items that are "Western Cut" would work well with a kilt.
For instance this Short Western coat for formal wear...

Yep, that sums it up for me also.
I wear cowboy boots and jeans when the occasion calls, hell, I wear boots with a suit, and even with a tux. But, regardless of geographical and cultural considerations, I wouldn't wear them with shorts (if I owned any shorts) and I ain't gonna wear them with a kilt. I see folks sporting cowboy hats at highland games, and I'm OK with that, because the sun can kill you in Texas. But I hope the boots and kilt hose guys are going for laughs because that's what they seem to elicit from most folks. Wanna wear your kilt and be a proud Texan? Wear the state tartan, that's what I do!

You said cowboy boots, and I understand. How do you feel about the low cut boots? Not cowboy boots, that is.

I know lots of guys wear hiking /chuka, etc.. boots with 'casual' kiltwear. That's cool, but personally I don't find those boots all that comfortable, so for each his own. Otherwise I'd guess my rule of thumb would be if I don't think a footwear selection would look OK with shorts, I likely wouldn't sport them with a kilt.

This is just wrong people.
If I wore a cowboy hat, western shirt, bolo tie, and cowboy boots with a pair of MC Hammer parachute pants, everyone would say how ridiculous they were together. Wearing them with a kilt is the same thing... IMHO

No... if you wore that, everyone would say:
Y'all can't touch this!
