"Western" Style with Contemporary Kilts

My feel is at this point, if the shoe or boot would work with long shorts, it ought to work with a kilt of the same color or tartan.

Okay, I'm a sixth-generation Texan, and unless I'm wearing shorts and flip-flops, I'm wearing boots and jeans.

I've seen several wearing cowboy boots and hats with kilts (and yes, even with a PC) at the various Highland games we attend around Texas, but I've got to say that I don't care for the look, and don't think it works. Personally, I think it looks a bit silly and costume-y (if that's a word).

IMHO, better to choose one look or the other, and if you choose to wear the kilt, then leave the cowboy boots at home on the day you attend the games.

For what it's worth, I regularly see one tall, older gentleman at the various games who's always sporting battered boots, well-worn Wranglers, an old Stetson, and a well-cut vest in his clan tartan. I think that's a far better look if you want to go Western.

I think you have nailed it Shaun. I like the look of western gear and love the look of highland gear, but not the look of the blend.

I do think that some items that are "Western Cut" would work well with a kilt.

As you can see from the little picture in the upper left here of me I have an Australian slouch hat. I think that is - with brim up or down - a pretty western look. If you're going to get into the desert and sheep and all I would look to Australia for some inspiration.

Have worn an Australian hat like that for decades in all sorts of weather and all over, great hat!

Sometimes Australia seems like an "Alternate USA," big, two coasts, varied climes and terrains, "British" early history...

...even a wild west.

chrisupyonder, that is a great example of how throwing in one item of Western style into your Highland attire can be like a bit of spice without ruining the dish. Well done.

This isn't limited to Scottish kilts, so might not need to be thought of as mixing Scottish and Western.

I think a non-tartan, modern or contemporary kilt is a better fit with Western gear, precisely because the Scottish association is somewhat loosened.
