Re: Tartan of the Month - Feb 12: what do you see
1. Seems to be of a lighter weight than January's specimen
2. Could the top and bottom edges have been turned under slightly before the overcast stitch was used? Based on personal experience, doing a such a tight and narrow overcast so close to a raw edge generally has the stitching pulling away from the fabric, but I don't see any of that in the pic.
3. High on my success for finding worsted singles in the January specimen, I'd like to say that I can see that on this tartan, but the left edge is too blurred. And, based on the threads coming away from the tartan in the top right, seem to suggest otherwise, but again, too blurry to say for sure.
4. The wide red stripe on the left may be the pivot for the sett?

They don't appear to be ut there is the possibility.

My imge is a little too small too to be sure but it looks as thought the threads on the right are singles.

YYGGRRR^RRRGGYYWBBWYYGGGGGGWWRRWRRWWG It may indeed although with such a small specimen it is difficult to be certain. However, if it is then what about the other pivot?

#1 The right hand edge was not ripped but cut. Yes
#2 It looks like there is a selvage or sewing on the top and bottom. I can not tell exactly what it is. Good - Sewing
#3 I am not sure but there could be a line of chain stitching on the right side to keep it from fraying as well, or it could be the beginning thread of a darker stripe. Well it's some sort of non-weaving strictch certainly but hard to say exactly what its purpose was
#4 The selvedge edge seems to be very uneven and the tartan looks distorted. What selvedge? The Sewing on top and bottom I mean
That is all I can see so far.
What have I got wrong?
Your Obedient Servant,
Karl
Well.
The tartan seems distorted. The top and bottom seem to be as well but even more. So where the top and bottom ripped or cut?
The piece also must have been cut from somewhere in the middle of the cloth as there is no selvage.
Whoever did the sewing on it seemed to want a long thin piece that needed to be finished on the edges. But a one inch wide piece? Not a sash, perhaps a garter tie?
The left side looks as if it might be torn instead of cut?
Some parts of the weave also seem to be uneven.
Am I on the right track Mr. Holmes? ith:

If the pattern is uneven, wouldn't that mean it was homemade? Would it be from a loom or do they do it by hand?

-the other pivot could be centered on the white stripe in the red section on the right.
5. Not sure, but that yellow stitching in the lower left looks vaguely like letters. It's messy, but possibly initials and some bit of embroidery?

Re: Tartan of the Month - Feb 12: what do you see
I've got it- This is all a prolonged and cruel joke, and it's actually taken from a plaid shirt that you got from a charity shop.
...am I right? ![Razz](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)
Heck- Is it the end of a tie that used to keep a kilt closed? Or that tied back some tartan drapes?
I'm grasping at straws, here.
