making adjustment to a kilt
I am making a kilt for my son for his wedding. He has a 28/29 inch waist. I know that this going to expand a little in the future. How do I make this kilt so that I can adjust it a bit larger in the future?

The best is to make your first deep pleat and last reverse pleat deeper that way you can easily add a pleat and extend the aprons.

Barb T's book (The Art of Kiltmaking) has very clear instructions on adding a hidden pleat for future expansoin.

As well as the pleats you will need to allow some extra fabric at the end of each apron and extra on the waistband at each end. A couple of inches extra extra tucked under before finishing should suffice

Re: making adjustment to a kilt
I'm not sure that I would worry too much, apart from setting the buckles to be on the tightest point at his current size, this means that he could have about 2" expansion to grow into!
Making it with a hidden pleat or two is a reasonable idea, but it's still a lot of work to unpick and restitch aprons, it's certainly worthwhile with a boys kilt, but an adult, I'm not so sure, as there are likely to be other changes as well (waist - hip differential).
Kilts are probably the most accomodating garment known to man, but when the time comes when it no longer fits , perhaps you can make him another!

I want to thank all of you who responded to my question & so quickly. I've made a couple of kilts before, so this isn't something new, but this young man is sooo skinny, that I know he will eventually expand a bit. Now I just need to get busy. Again, Thank YOu
