I always thought that Coats of Arms were given to individuals and not to familys?

There is a difference in practice between the UK and the continent. On the continent the Coat of Arms is connected with the family.
There may be differences for individuals especially in the mantling and the crest, but mostly not in the shield. But that is not common practice.
