It was done by hand - a hand-loom. One cannot plait or somehow fold yarn to make tartan cloth.

Heck- Is it the end of a tie that used to keep a kilt closed? Or that tied back some tartan drapes?

    I'm grasping at straws, here.
I'd say more like casting about widely.

You're all looking and not seeing (Dixiecat excepted to some extent). Read these words carefully - look at the setting .

    All I knows is....
it does not seem to registered in the STA unless I'm completely reading the colours wrongly or my Ferret isn't working.

Hummmm. There's a fuller, academic version but it's not available for public access. It's kept fairly tightly controlled so that the information can be checked, corrected and generally protected for future generations.

is the fact that it's not publicly known tartan significant or am I barking up the wrong tree?

All that I can guess is that its a Buchanan muted. Otherwise i'm at a loss for words...poor wee scrap O'tartan....looks like a kilt that my dog's played tug O' war with and then the cat made a bed out of. And all that's left is a scrap no bigger than the palm of my hand. Sniff sniff.
