As for Musashi, I understand that the one time that he was almost beaten (beaten, really), was at the hands of a bojutsu man... some kind of monk, was he?
And when he broke Sasaki Kojiro, he did so with a very large bokken that he carved from a spare oar, during the row out to Ganryujima. Or so they say.
