    Jabots

Well, it's been a week and nobody else has said anything, so I am proposing a new topic.

The jabot is possibly one of the most controversial items of THCD- even many hard boiled kilt wearers refrain from it. But I was watching ON HER MAJESTY's SECRET SERVICE again the other night and there was George Lazenby as James Bond ( pretending to be Hillary Bray, of the College of Heralds) and he was replete in a jabot. Looking at these brief clips, I can't be sure if he was wearing a regulation doublet or a PC.

( see about 10 seconds in)

Ironically enough, the most blatant other example of a jabot with a PC is Sean Connery in a photo that I am certain someone else can post.

Charles Thompson warns against a jabot worn against a large expanse of white shirt, but both of these Bonds seem to have compensated by wearing a larger-than-usual jabot.

It is a very dressy look indeed, and I expect most of us will not need to be THAT dressed up, at least not more than once in our lives. Can some of the more widely traveled members show some photos of jabot-wearing , particularly among living Scots?

    Thanks

    David,

I was drafting my response whilst you posted your photo - quicker on the trigger, Marine!

Personally, I am fond of the jabot and cuffs look, or sometimes without the cuffs and only the jabot. However, I would only wear the jabot with a doublet of some sort, either single or souble-breasted (think Montrose, Kenmore, or Balmoral). If wearing a jabot with an open doublet, such as the Regulation, Appin, Sheriffmuir, then I would ensure that I wear a 5-6 button waistcoat (has a high 'neck') and not a 3-4 button, which the latter is naturally lower cut, thus revealing more of the wearer's shirt and to my eye, does not flatter/set-off the jabot at all. I would not wear a jabot with a coatee, such as the common 'Prince Charlie.' These are my opinions on the matter. Jabots are equally nice for black and white tie affairs.

How about the past and present Dukes of Argyll:

    And Kinloch-Anderson's superb example:

And finally, Clan Macpherson Chieftain, the late Euan Macpherson of Glentruim, who always wore a jabot for evening attire. Also shown is a painting of Glentruim's grandfather and previous Laird of Glentruim:

As always, you can wear what you want. I also noted that Sir Sean also wore evening clothes complete with a fur sporran during the day, so I don't know that we'd look to him as an "expert" in highland attire.

I agree with Kyle, as always. I only wear a jabot with cuffs in a full front doublet. And since I so rarely have an occassion to wear such these days, I haven't don't so in several years. Here is a photo of what I mean:

The white jabot just disappears unless there's a lot of dark color underneath. David's photo of the Duke is an example of why I don't care for the lookalthough no one could fault HG's sense of style or knowledge of good dress or taste. Subsequent photos from Kyle do show how to make the jabot stand our with an open jacket--waist coats, etc.--but for my tastes, it's full front only.

P.S. Can you tell i was not so long of tooth in that photo?

Here's a question for you, MacLowlife.

Can the jabot be successfully worn with trues and a doublet?

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

In my opinion, yes. See Niall Livingstone of Bachuil, Baron of the Bachuil, Coarb of St Moluag, Abbot of Lismore, Chief of Clan MacLea - the Highland Livingstones, below:

    thanks

I agree with Creag Dubh about the jabot with trews- it looks good to me.

What color was Euan MacPherson of Glentruim's doublet? I am hoping it was RED.

It was a pale blue, very smart and a colour not seen very often anymore. It also had genuine Cairngorm stone/silver buttons.
