One question that's been bugging me about contemporary kilt-wearing (specifically the utilitarian types) is: can / should one wear a sporran with it? I'll admit it - I'm a big fan of the sporran, and not much for the addition of external cargo pockets to the utilitarian-style kilt.

    What's the general consensus?

I think if the kilt has pockets, especially big cargo pockets on the side, then a sporran is redundant and looks out of place. If there are no pockets, then a sporran might be necessary. If there are side slash pockets and/or rear pockets, I could see it go either way.

The sporran is a traditional and practical accessory. I think it would work better with contemporary kilts that are cut more like a traditional kilt i.e. a Freedom Kilt or a Buzz Kidder.
