And Tsukahara Bokuden.
I do remember Musashi beating opponents with a quarterstaff and one with a boat oar.
Sir Didymous,
when presenting your event, I agree with the others that it would be best to put an explanation with your gear. Having a black watch group would be ideal as well. It is important to get the facts right and not dwell on hollywood icons for sources.

Oh, Bokuden would have ALL SORTS of fun. ;)
As for Musashi, I understand that the one time that he was almost beaten (beaten, really), was at the hands of a bojutsu man... some kind of monk, was he?
And when he broke Sasaki Kojiro, he did so with a very large bokken that he carved from a spare oar, during the row out to Ganryujima. Or so they say.

You can see some reenactors dressed for the period in this YouTube video, which also happens to be my all-time favorite version of Robert Burns' famous poem "Bannockburn". Best viewed with the volume turned WAY UP!!

Keep in mind that a lot of the "country" folk would have worn what was acceptable to their lifestyle-which didn't always mean a kilt. Might be dissapointing, but an overgrown linen shirt or leine probably was more than common in this era-combined with a overgarmet for warmth...On the warrior side, this was the era of chain and modular plate, so...unless you were well to do, you probably would have been wearing your regular cloths to battle with a padded gambeson.

Well the reenactment fight occured, and all went well. Unfortunatly we were unable to locate a 1700's scotsman, so one of the knights in our troop agreed to dress as one. It was his first time in a kilt but I think he did alright. I dressed similar to a highland warrior as depicted on a graveslab that was posted earlier on this thread.

I'm not sure the chainlink fence and the bike are period, but otherwise it looks quite good.

Thanks, I just hope that if we do this again next year they move our fighting area. I hate fighting on concrete. I'm sure that the long handled war hammer I'm leaning on there put a crack in the tennis court they had us on.
