So, what is the definition of clerical dress? Just the collar, or the black shirt that goes with it?

. . . or a white shirt & collar with a clerical vest to produce the same effect. When in company of black or white tie individuals, a black suit with clerical shirt and collar is still considered appropriate because, I guess, it's the "company uniform." It would look silly to have a clerical shirt or vest or whatever under a dinner jacket or cutaway with tails. Considerably less silly with an Argyle, Crail and kilt etc.

Father, I have seen many priests wear a dinner jacket with a collar and rabat, sometimes with a clerical waistcoat. I think it looks perfectly acceptable. I have not seen a priest in a tail coat, mercifully. Wear an evening frock coat and breeches in that situation, or do what most Roman Catholic prelates and a number of priests do: wear cassock and ferraiolone.

I would humbly suggest that you emulate the mess dress worn by Chaplains in HM Forces as being the "correct" way of wearing clerical dress with formal Highland attire.

My memory could be playing tricks on me but I am sure that I recall seeing clerics of either/both the Church of Scotland and the Scottish Episcopal Church wearing a white shirt with the full (i.e. not Roman style) clerical collar. I am no expert on clerical dress but I think the Marcella dress shirt with clerical collar would look fine with a black PC and three buttoned vest.

If they wear a standard clerical shirt and collar (I assume black either tonsure, tab or tunic) do they then wear the 3 button waistcoat? Remember I'm wearing a PC
Hard to remember but I think I have seen a black three-button waistcoat with a black clerical shirt and PC ... black-on-black-on-black ... and a purple clerical shirt or vestock (retired Pisky bishop) with no waistcoat.
