Yep, Ron, this one is pretty close to what I was originally thinking!

Unfortunately, even if I wasn't ga-ga over Brooke's kilt, I'd feel odd going with a "clan" tartan. I know it's not a huge deal, and not too many people have an issue with it, but I'm still more comfortable with the universals.
However, I may have some pull with a high-ranking M(a)cDonald man. Not a clan chief, but the gent is pretty influential. He and I bonded over a bellyful of Hornitos and tamales in Cabo last November. Some may scoff, but I know what we shared that week was real.
You can't fight what's right...

I'm sure he'll give me a pass.

LitTrog: I have a Capercaillie as well and really like it. Strictly a matter of personal taste and no negativity intended but lovat blue and tan look great with the tartan as well.
Another tartan on my wish list is MacRae hunting weathered tartan. http://www.lochcarron.com/tartan/mac...g_ancient.html

Good example of why I simultaneously enjoy and dread this thread.

With the exception of Lime's disgusting Ulster, I haven't seen a tartan that I wouldn't be proud to wear. I've made a decision on the next kilt, but am happy to field any suggestions anyone has. My kidney sale might come through, or Brooke may do something vile and public in the next 10 months that will force me to distance myself from him completely. A deep bench is a good thing!

Nah, that was all you. You're better.
Ron--if we could wrap him in this tartan, I think he'd be much less reviled:
Bacon Tartan

Everything is better when it's wrapped in bacon!

Well, I hope the bacon tartan cloth isn't as thin and the bacon he adds to his burgers...you can see through it!...maybe even spit through it....

It's very, very difficult to go wrong with Maple Leaf. In my experience, it always looks better in person that in a photo.
Weathered tartans are a possibility. Marton Mills's weathered MacLennon/Logan is a personal favorite
As usonian reminds me, House of Edgar and Batley have a series of "muted" tartans that are lovely. My Wallace muted comes out maroon, black, and gold (versus the usual red, black, yellow). It goes well with brown and olive colors.
Check out HOE's Roxburgh Red or Nithsdale in the muted colors. While you look at HoE's Irish range, check out County Down and County Tyrone. I believe all these can be found in the tartan viewer at Matt's District Tartans site.
Our figheadair masterminded getting the Culloden artifact tarten woven in reproduction colors, and it is scrumptious. My piece is still awaiting the needle... for color comparison, this one is sitting by a Wallace hunting ancient.

Here are some kilts made by Matt Newsome from that fabric.
Here's the muted red Wallace, in a winter scene---actual snow in South Carolina: those are not cotton bolls in the background.
